The house fly is the most common species of fly in the world. Yes, that’s right, everyone from France to San Diego shares your frustration. According to Pest World, flies are attracted to environments that are 83 degrees Fahrenheit. In the winter, this means they’re attracted to your warm home and in the scorching heat of summer, they’re drawn to cool places like your garage. Once in an optimal environment, flies search for dirty areas to lay eggs. Once laid, these eggs can hatch in only 12 to 24 hours. In a female fly’s lifetime, she can hatch between 350 and 900 eggs. This can cause a huge problem if she decides to cozy up to a trashcan in your home.

Flies are annoying, but are they dangerous?

Flies don’t sting or bite, but they can transfer a variety of diseases. According to the World Health Organization, flies carry diseases on their bodies and in their stomachs. That means when they land on your plate, they can transmit whatever bacteria they touched on your trashcan. Yuck!

How can I prevent fly infestation?

Pest World suggests taking three steps to prevent flies from infesting your home:

  1. Take out your trash quickly and regularly. Garbage is a welcome host for flies.
  2. Clean up pet waste immediately to prevent flies from laying eggs in it.
  3. Install mesh screens on all windows to prevent flies and other pests from entering.
